  4. 1953. He led his country's independence
  5. movement, was prime minister of Nyasaland
  6. (the former name of Malawi) from 1963, and
  7. became the first president of the one-party
  8. republic. His rule has been authoritarian,
  9. and in 1971 he made himself life president.
